WHAT IS Freeride …

Freeride. We are already used to this term, although no one is able to say what it is exactly, even the riders themselves. The word “freeride” is usually understood as free descent along an unfamiliar slope outside the laid tracks at the maximum possible speed under the given conditions. In a sense, this formulation is probably suitable. But this is only a miserable attempt to choose terminology, to drive into a narrow framework of the formula an absolutely immense concept, which includes philosophy, attitude to skiing, to oneself and perception of the Mountain … Perhaps the attitude to the Mountain is what distinguishes a rider from a beautifully skiing expert? That’s right, to the Mountain – with a capital letter, because all the people whom we call freeriders (they prefer to say something about themselves like “well, we know how to ski a bit”) have great respect for the Mountain. Otherwise, it’s simply impossible, because unless otherwise, the Mountain will sooner or later punish, no matter how complacent and calm it may seem. That is, for some time you can, of course, be dismissive of the Mountain, but, as those who we call riders say, not for long. Or or. Or you will have trouble, or you begin to understand, feel, in a different way relates to grief. Sooner or later, for each rider, this attitude develops into a very special, deeply personal feeling, which none of them ever talks about. Just before the descent, the equipment is carefully checked and the backpack is adjusted, avalanche sensors are checked and the descent trajectory is selected for a long time. This is not cowardice. This is the wisdom accumulated over many thousands of kilometers of slopes. No one rushes headlong down the alluring looking slope, no one rushes the leader who thinks and chooses, weighs the pros and cons of every possible option, tries to peek under such amazing snow, tries to understand what the Mountain has in mind this time…

Or maybe freeride is a backpack that is constantly collected, burnt out in the hard sun, in the corridor of a city apartment? Households stumble about him, and his wife once again asks him to “remove” him. And what is “somewhere”? After all, he has only two places – either here, or on the shoulders of the owner – there is no third. A backpack is not only a container for an avalanche shovel, sensor, helmet, walkie-talkie and other necessary things. In a sense, a backpack is a partner. It protects the back. Protects from shock.

Or you may say freeride is an always ready and sun-burnt backpack waiting in your apartment? And everybody is constantly tumbling over it and asking you to put it “somewhere”. But somewhere where? It has only two “wheres” – there and on your shoulders, protecting your back, as it’s your partner, and not just a purse for avalanche shovel, tracker, helm, radio set, and other stuff.

We can say that freeriding is riding in the snow. Of course, virgin soil is one of the main rewards for the rider. Probably, virgin land – a deep, almost weightless, fluffy virgin land – this is what mountain skiing originated for, originated when there were no marked tracks, no powerful snow groomers, no lifts. How to explain to a person who has never tried skiing at all, the sensations that you get when going down the fluffy powder snow? The descent of the virgin lands is just that borderline state that is between the earth and the sky, between running and flying, that sensation for which the masses of people attend attractions. Only this sensation is controlled by you and is very long in time – it lasts the whole descent, it is supplemented by a host of other magical sensations – snow beating in your face, blown up by your own skis, crazy speed, quickly changing species around you that you notice or catch a glimpse, out of the corner of your eye, or during a stop, watching the descent of the rest of the team. And a soft landing after the jump, when there is no impact on the slope, but there is only a soft push, and even if you didn’t resist, if you fell, then in the downy feather bed … No, to convey all these sensations is a completely hopeless business. Yes, and not all sensations are listed here, it’s even impossible to list them, this is a special world that is around you, another world within you, these two worlds merge and intersect, and you yourself control the merging of these worlds …

Or is freeride a sound at the same time as the thought comes to my head: “but should I tear …” a telephone call, and a familiar voice in the receiver speaks the same phrase? And urgent matters are postponed, and urgent business meetings are postponed, and the necessary calls are made, and tickets are bought, and not two, but six, because until the evening there is still a lot of time and four more will have time to postpone, reschedule and make calls. And business partners, sitting in their offices, once again twist a cell phone antenna at their temple and, shrugging their shoulders, record the new time of the meetings rescheduled for the next week – they are used to it.
