What is the difference between a longboard and a skate?

Many of those who have never seen a board for longboarding close by, but ride a skateboard themselves, wonder – what is the difference between a longboard and a skate, what are the details and characteristics?

There are several answers.

The first and main difference between a longboard and a skateboard is its purpose. A skate is a small (short) board with a very stiff and narrow suspension, as well as small, very hard wheels. The nose and tail of the skateboard are raised, to facilitate tricks with the separation of the board from the asphalt or ramp. A skateboard is designed to perform precisely technical tricks, without moving over long distances. Of course, you can drive from one bus stop to another on a skateboard, but it wasn’t created for this, it has a different purpose, and therefore traveling somewhere, especially if the asphalt is imperfect, will not be very comfortable, unless, of course, it has bearings not from ammonia. Also, the skate is not very stable at high speeds, prone to uncontrolled buildup (“roach”) and is not intended for high-speed descents from the hills.

Longboard developed completely differently. Born from a surfboard, it is designed just for what does not work well with a skateboard – for high-speed comfortable driving over long distances, for driving with wide arches (carving), for acceleration (pumping) and for high-speed descent from asphalt slides. The longboard deck (the board itself) is much longer, more often than a meter, and sometimes even longer than two meters (surfboard). The nose and tail of the longboard are most often straight, since it rarely performs tricks with the separation of the board from the asphalt. On some models, a raised tail (kick-tail) is made, but this is more for the amateur than is a mandatory attribute.

The suspension on the longboard is much wider than on the skateboard (from 150 to 190 mm.), The wheels are much larger in diameter, wider in the frontal profile, and softer. All this gives the longboard enormous stability, including at tremendous speeds. On a serpentine, the logboard accelerates over 100 km / h! At the same time, he does not blunder, does not swing, and he does not strive to reset the rider. At lower speeds, riding it is generally a pleasure.

Thanks to this, the longboard is perfect for skating with the breeze and is suitable even for installing a small sail.

The longboard deck differs from the skateboard deck not only in size and shape, but also in a number of design differences. It is softer, has a “return”, and also has technological bends (concave, canber and others) that increase its driving performance. It is almost impossible to make a longboard with your own hands because of the need to take into account the huge number of technological subtleties. You can’t just take it and cut it out of plywood. More precisely, you can cut it, but it will not be a longboard, but simply a board with wheels, a large skateboard or a scooter without a steering wheel. It will differ from the serial board made in California, about the same as the “Cossack” from the “Cadillac”. When riding a self-made board, you will not even understand what the thrill of longboarding is.

And, by the way, about the buzz, that is, about what you can do on a longboard (naturally, on a company board, crafts of Chinese and Russian craftsmen are beyond the scope of this article). The first and most important feeling from riding a longboard is the feeling of sliding, or even flying, just as smooth and swift as from riding on a surf in the ocean. The second main feeling from longboarding is speed. Third – comfort, stability and the desire to conquer space, to go, go and go.

Skating in wide arcs (surf-style) is one of the main ways to have fun on a longboard. In words, the feeling of this is difficult to convey, you need to watch a video about longboarding or, even better, try it yourself. Completely coincides with the feeling of ocean surfing. Only cooler. Because it’s possible to drive 50 meters on the crest of the wave at best, and on the asphalt – kilometers in the same style and condition.

Descent from steep hills is fun for those who can ride. It feels great to look like controlling a supersonic fighter with the power of thought.

Dancing, cross-stepping, board-woking. Walking on the board, changing racks in motion. It is very beautiful and stylish. This is a real dance on the board, but at the same time, and a way to control it.
