Wonder Boy’s last trick: Dave Mirra committed suicide

“The rock and roll star must die,” is the song in one of the songs of the Spleen group. After death, an ordinary star will become a real legend. Partly the same, as stated in the song, the “axiom” applies to sports, especially to its extreme varieties.

On Thursday, February 4, 2016, extreme cyclist Dave Mirra became a legend. The body of the famous biker was found in his own van in the area where he allegedly visited friends. Death came from a gunshot wound, which, according to the police, the 41-year-old athlete inflicted on himself.

Wonder boy
Dave Mirra was born in a small provincial town of Chittenango in the state of New York in an average working American family. Mirra was the second child and grew up with an older brother named Tim. The boys knew the bitterness of the loss early, because when Dave was only four years old, his parents divorced – his mother left the family. The guys remained in the care of their father. WHAT IS Freeride …

Freeride. We are already used to this term, although no one is able to say what it is exactly, even the riders themselves. The word “freeride” is usually understood as free descent along an unfamiliar slope outside the laid tracks at the maximum possible speed under the given conditions. In a sense, this formulation is probably suitable. But this is only a miserable attempt to choose terminology, to drive into a narrow framework of the formula an absolutely immense concept, which includes philosophy, attitude to skiing, to oneself and perception of the Mountain … Perhaps the attitude to the Mountain is what distinguishes a rider from a beautifully skiing expert? That’s right, to the Mountain – with a capital letter, because all the people whom we call freeriders (they prefer to say something about themselves like “well, we know how to ski a bit”) have great respect for the Mountain. Otherwise, it’s simply impossible, Continue reading

Building

Building (Eng. Buildering) – a kind of extreme sports, in which participants climb the outside of buildings and other urban structures. The word “building” is a language contamination, a hybrid word consisting of the word “building” and the term “bouldering” (bouldering, a separate type of climbing).

Usually, building involves free climbing in difficult conditions and can be extremely dangerous. Often carried out illegally, building is mostly done at night. Connoisseurs of building, seen climbing buildings without permission, are regularly met by the police after completing their stunts. Exciting building actions, such as climbing free skyscrapers, are usually performed alone by experienced climbers, sometimes attracting the attention of a large crowd of passers-by and the media, but such cases are rare.

Building can also take a form more akin to bouldering, which tends to climb and / or cross shorter sections of buildings and structures. While property owners still largely condemn such actions, some, such as the University of Colorado at Boulder, in many cases turn a blind eye to such actions. Continue reading
